Explosive Demolition / Viaduct Demolition

Client: Rail Property Ltd
Discipline(s): Explosive demolition
Location: Leicestershire
Programme: 20 weeks

Coleman & Company was appointed to deliver a viaduct demolition project at the East Norton Viaduct in Leicestershire.   This thirteen span viaduct, close to the village of East Norton, measured 190 metres in length (the equivalent to two football pitches), was 12-storeys high and had a mass weight of 26,000 tonnes.

Scope of works

The project involved:
  • Explosive demolition and removal of a 600 metre long, 12-storey high structurally unsound brick viaduct
  • A team of 15 operatives
  • An explosive engineering team
  • Heavy excavators
  • Crushing crew
  • A structural engineer
Project challenges

Apart from the obvious constraints associated with using explosives to demolish structures of this nature, this demolition project had a number of additional environmental constraints, including:
  • The risk of contaminating Eye Brook running below
  • The management and control of protected species including bats and otters
  • Extensive traffic management
The client was particularly pleased that Coleman & Coleman was able to complete the project on time, within budget and re-use all of the recycled arisings in local infrastructure projects.

This project also included the management and protection of local wildlife including crayfish, bats, otters and fields of sheep.
